Twelve Sky 2

Review

Reviewed by Brendon Lindsey

Twelve Sky 2 is the epitome of a love it or hate it game. On one hand, those who loved the original €œTwelve Sky will find much of the same – only improved. Better visuals, a better engine, better animations, a bigger variety of enemies and items, etc. Meanwhile, those who didn't care for the original Twelve Sky€ will find little to enjoy in the MMORPG's sequel. At its core, Twelve Sky 2€ is like many other free-to-play MMORPGs, with a heavy emphasis on grinding, and a minimum amount of character customization. Expect only three core attack skills (one single attack, one single target multi-attack, and one AOE), which is far fewer than many people who run multiple hotbars are used to.

To make up for that, the game differs from others with a wide variety of support and extraneous skills on top of the class ones. For example, jumping is a skill, as is siphoning your own HP to heal another player. If I had to categorize the game, I would say it fits more with the experienced casual crowd; those who have experience with MMOs, but who may not have played a lot of recent games, or have the time/means to subscribe to a retail title. €œTwelve Sky 2 does feature a grind, but compared to many free games it's really not that bad; until level 30, it's not even noticeable at all, and beyond that you can get enormous XP bonuses by partying with other players. It's the three-skill combat and the easy-to-understand PVP that make me believe this game would be enjoyed more by a non-hardcore crowd, though. In PVP, it almost always boils down to using attack skills over and over, and then using pots to heal HP or Chi (mana) until one of you falls down. In largescale PVP, it always depends on which side has the most players, as there are no instanced RvR type maps in this one. For those who have years of experience playing tactical PVP games where you'll have to go in with a plan, a build, and a counter to numerous situations, a battle of attrition which ultimately turns into a battle of one-shotting at higher levels may not be your cup of tea.

However, players new to the MMORPG genre,€“ or those who have passed on the last couple years of releases,€“ will feel right at home in Twelve Sky 2.€ While the gameplay may be more reminiscent of older MMORPG titles, the graphics are obviously from more modern times. Visually, Twelve Sky 2 is a big step up from the original œTwelve Sky.€ Not only do models look better, but animations are smoother, enemies look better (and are more numerous in types), and the armor and weapons look awesome. If you're like me, it's going to take you quite some time to decide which class to play. (While part of that is because of the general lack of information about what each class can do, it's largely in part due to the fact that they all look so awesome.) So should you play €œTwelve Sky 2?€ That depends. If you liked the original, then the answer is an astounding yes. And, judging by the early playerbase, a lot of people did like the original. At the same time, if you got bored of the original or never enjoyed it, it's better to pass on this go-round. For those who have never tried €œTwelve Sky€ before, whether or not you'll enjoy this game will depend on two things: A) could you have fun playing a game with a very limited number of attack skills, all unlocked from an early level, and B) do you enjoy games with a heavy emphasis on Asian-inspired and martial arts-inspired aesthetics? Answer yes to either of those, then give €œTwelve Sky 2€ a try. Answer no to both? You'll probably be better off looking elsewhere for your next MMORPG.
