Sudden Attack Review

by Cody Hargreaves

For as long as I can remember, people have called me a ‘dreamer’. From my understanding, this label has been a result of my vivid and unrelenting imagination, as regardless of my age, I’ve always lived with my head in the clouds. There isn’t a math test in the world that can keep me from drifting away to another place, and recently, I’ve found that place is World of Starcraft. Just imagine the possibilities; a vast, ever-expanding universe filled with thousands of players, Terran, Protos and Zerg alike, battling it out in a fully realised MMOFPS experience. The Terran, wandering the wastelands of forgotten planets in search of ancient and well-guarded Protos artifacts, while the Zerg await, hidden beneath the earth, for the opportune moment to strike. It would be the game of the decade, and everyone would play for years to come. And most importantly, it would be new.

I mention this now as a comparison of sorts; a list of everything Sudden Attack is not. Sudden Attack offers neither ingenuity nor innovation of any kind at all, opting instead for the ‘tried and true’ route and borrowing heavily (as so many an MMOFPS title before it) from the infamous Counter Strike. In that way, it’s difficult to class Sudden Attack as an MMO at all, as by replacing a persistent world with a game lobby, it removes the ‘massive’ element entirely. But this is by no means a bad thing, and Sudden Attack is by no means a bad game; I merely felt that you should be prepared, should you decide to play it, for an ultimately familiar experience. On the bright side, you’re probably already very good at it.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. BUT DAMN, IT WAS GOOD!

The list of Counter Strike clones is endless, taking up over 50% of the MMOFPS market on their own. This is because Counter Strike was a magnificent title, and developers such as those behind Sudden Attack, wanted to emulate that success by offering players a similar experience with their own unique flavour. And it worked. Sudden Attack quite literally houses thousands of players at a time, and as games can be joined from the server list, it’s unlikely that you’ll be asked to spend a second looking for a game throughout your entire experience playing it. This is fantastic; as it offers us gamers something so rare we barely remember its name: choice. Game types range from standard Deathmatch and Protect/Plant the Bomb scenarios all the way to user-specified styles such as snipers and knives only, and as there are hundreds of games available at any given time, you’ll be free to choose exactly the game type for you.

And the rest, as they say, is history. You’ll shoot people, they’ll shoot you, and you’ll love every second of it, should this particular style of gaming goodness suit your needs. And the more you do it, the better you’ll get, as not only will you level up in rank, but too, you’ll earn points that can be spent on upgrading weapons, equipment and new skins for your character. Of course, there’s a cash shop too, that’ll require the use of your parent’s credit card and offer you some very cool upgrades, but let’s face it, if you’re good enough, you won’t need to.

All in all, Sudden Attack is a well crafted, if visually dated, MMOFPS that will keep you entertained for hours and won’t cost you a thing. If you like the style, or are new to gaming and are looking for somewhere to start, you need look no further. Competency over quality, right?
