Last weekend, all the cool kids were at an Ariana Grande concert. And when we say all, we mean all, as Fortnite’s virtual Rift Tour was of course broadcast to anyone around the world who plays Fortnite. Which is a lot.

Even if you’re not a fan of Ariana, the mind bending virtual adventure-gig was probably worth catching regardless. The 14-minute show took full advantage of its potential, taking the audience through several minigame-laden worlds as the setlist played out, featuring ‘support’ from other global superstars including LSD (Labrinth, Sia and Diplo), Juice WRLD and even Wolfmother - a left-field addition that would feel somewhat out of place in a real-world gig. But the Rift Tour was anything but typical.

Players could attend the performance for free between 6th - 8th August, with start times that catered for all timezones. Throughout the set, players were unable to harm one another, but could instead play around in settings awash in pastel pinks and blues, whether it was surfing on a colourful waterslide, flying with Ariana through a rainbow in a bubble or riding a unicorn through a series of rainbow rings while a giant Ariana swung through rabbit-shaped clouds in the distance. To say it was like living out a teenage girl’s fever dream is probably putting it mildly.

If you missed it, however, then luckily for us Gamespot managed to record the entire thing. Like one of those people that have their phone up all the way through a gig, only infinitely less annoying. Also, props to them for smashing the competition in the Wolfmother section that saw players defeat a crystal demon in biplanes.
