Untamed Isles is an upcoming monster-taming MMO from Phat Loot Studios - but Pokémon it is not. Despite the similarities, this indie venture is in a world of its own, utilising NFTs and innovative mechanics to bring a unique spin on the tried-and-tested formula.
Untamed Isles Key Features
If you are a Pokémon fan, then some of the gameplay in Untamed Isles will be pleasantly familiar: breeding and collecting monsters, then sending your team of six into turn-based combat. However, Pokémon fans the world over have been clamouring for a Pokémon MMORPG for years - and Untamed Isles looks to scratch that itch.
Dungeons, raids, socially-driven mechanics including proximity voice chat and, of course, PvP are some familiar MMO mechanics that will be included in this monster-taming RPG. A beautiful cel-shaded art style reminiscent of the critically lauded Breath of the Wild begs to be absorbed through the exploration of the vast open world.
But it is the breeding and customisation mechanics where Untamed Isles shines. Each monster’s strengths and weaknesses will be determined by seven body parts, which in turn determine a moveset based on customised mutations. These monsters can be tokenised to be traded, sold, and bought via the marketplace as NFTs. But the Phat Loot Studios’ mantra of ‘Game first, Crypto second’ promises that players who don’t wish to engage with the crypto side of the game can still enjoy the game in all its glory.
And then there’s the lore. While many fantasy RPGs are known for the depth of their lore, not many have been released alongside a full-on novel. But Untamed Isles: The Path Awakens, written by bestselling author Aaron Hodges, is available as of now, and wonderfully fleshes out the game that is to come.
We reached out to Aaron for his take on the upcoming title:
"One of the big things about the Untamed team (of Phat Loot Studios) is that we're new and keen to do things our own way. Josh and all the Devs are always interesting on our Discord and we're all really open to community feedback. Josh's goal is to develop a game 'by gamers for gamers'. We have a well developed lore (including an entire book that precedes the game) and are really keen to have an engaging storyline.
Players will (hopefully) love the game because we don't intend to be a copy of Pokémon or other Monster Taming games, but rather stand on our own feet. The team have created a monster system that's pretty unique - individual tames can actually be a mix of different species rather than limited to a few creatures. Story wise, the background of the world draws from Scottish and British history, while for exploration of the isles themselves I draw on mystery fantasy works like Lost and The Invention of Morel"
When Can We Play?
Untamed Isles is aiming for an early-access release in early 2022 via Steam, and will include a Windows and Mac client. It is available for pre-order via Kickstarter, and we’d recommend keeping an eye on the roadmap and the regularly updated news page to stay in the loop.
