"I have a dream. It starts in the desert." The Dune Awakening Gameplay Trailer gives us a glimpse into the spice wars.
What We Learned From the Dune Awakening Gameplay Trailer
Highly anticipated Dune MMO, Dune Awakening, is doing a good job of getting sci-fi fans hot under the collar - which is pretty apt for a game set on a desert planet. We recently covered what little information we knew following its announcement. But with the reveal of a spicy new Dune Awakening gameplay trailer during the Game Awards 2022, we thought we'd update you on more things we've learned since then.
It's worth noting that the Dune gameplay trailer was both short and only offered a look at the game in its pre-alpha stage. But an update to the official website - and tidbits from the trailer itself - has revealed and confirmed some pretty significant features.
For instance, worms aren't the only fauna that players will encounter upon the desert planet. Big, open spaces with nothing in them can be a problem for some open-world games. But some cute rodent-like creatures made their debut in this Dune Awakening trailer, along with a cavalcade of different locales like caves, ancient "testing stations" (AKA Ecology Labs), populated villages and bandit-infested dunes.
The threat of a random worm attack may be a cause of constant concern when navigating the hostile sands of Arrakis. Though they are far from being the only threat. Spice lies at the heart of Dune gameplay, with PvP skirmishes centering around the spice blows that will spring up across the ever-shifting sands. "He who controls the spice controls the universe," after all.
To help with these naturally occurring skirmishes, players can pilot a repertoire of vehicles including tanks and the famous Ornithopters. Banding together with friends will maximize potential amid the sands, with players even being able to found their House Minor by allying with one of the Great Houses. Familiar faces from the original works will also make appearances throughout players' journeys.
Base-building, water-rationing and crafting are all bread-and-butter survival mechanics that will also be at the heart of Dune Awakening gameplay. Players will also be free to find their own path, whether it be as an ornithopter-piloting explorer, an armor-clad mercenary, or a spice mogul.
We also learned that the game will release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with more information being steadily released throughout the year. Those that can't wait to dive in, however, can sign-up for Beta testing on the official website.
