Indie Spotlight: Kisnard Online The One-Man MMORPG Running Since 2014
Kisnard Online is a free-to-play 2D fantasy MMORPG first released in 2014 whose longevity is a testament to its single developer, Jay Avondoglio (AKA Dev Proskier). Built as a tribute to Dransik, which was itself created in honour of Ultima V , Kisnard Online claims a royal bloodline worthy of its mediaeval setting.
According to Avondoglio, Kisnard began with a tutorial on how to make a Java chat application. From there a game steadily emerged (and is still emerging), with the dev avoiding libraries aside from Java, logging, and an mp3 library in order to customise and add any feature he could dream of. The result is a distinctive and compelling open-world experience 11 years in the making with a tight-knit community at its back.
As the lore is slowly revealed, each researcher's name is attributed to the discovery, placing them on a researcher 'leader board' to dish out appropriate bragging rights.
Kisnard Online Key Features
Described as having an "old school vibe with new school features", Kisnard Online's development has "no end in sight", with new content being added regularly. Questing, tradeskills, mythical monsters, treasure and PvP offer a familiar set of mechanics in a vast open world rendered in a nostalgic 2D pixel art style.
However, one particularly unique feature is the community-led wiki page, designed to release information on in-game items incrementally as players themselves stumble upon and 'research' each drop. As the lore is slowly revealed, each researcher's name is attributed to the discovery, placing them on a researcher 'leaderboard' to dish out appropriate bragging rights.
When Can We Play?
Kisnard Online is officially live and playable on both Android devices running Android 6.0 or greater, and any computer operating system that has Java 1.7 installed with 1GB of RAM. Making it an extremely accessible title for both mobile gamers and those with minimal gaming rigs.
One of the most recent updates has seen the addition of School Island to help new players on their way. So now is a great time to show your support and give this solo-developed venture a spin.
