In the wake of the catastrophe, CCP Games has jumped into action with a new PLEX for GOOD campaign. You can help.
Feelgood Friday: EVE Online’s PLEX for Good is Helping Provide Relief to Turkey and Syria
There may have been a time when stating that EVE Online, a sci-fi MMORPG where people simulate being space pirates, was an unlikely place to find real-world hope in the face of an international tragedy. But CCP Games has made a habit of ensuring that EVE Online is a go-to hub of goodwill in the form of PLEX for GOOD. And they're at it again.
Following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the world mobilized. Rescue teams from every corner of the earth are descending to affected areas in an effort to mitigate the disaster that has thus far resulted in the loss of nearly 40,000 lives. Suffice to say, such a gargantuan relief effort requires financial support, which is where Capsuleers come in.
PLEX for GOOD was last deployed less than a year ago in an effort to provide relief to war victims in Ukraine to the tune of more than $500,000. Since PLEX for GOOD began in 2005, it has raised over $1.2 million in humanitarian relief.
The model is simple. As enterprising Capsuleers are aware, EVE Online's in-game currency can be an effective way to make real-world cash. And PLEX for GOOD is an initiative that gives players the opportunity to donate their cosmic earnings to good causes.
As of now until 23:59 UTC on February 21st, CCP will be accepting these donations by allowing players to contract PLEX to the in-game character "CCP PLEX for GOOD". The shorter-than-usual window for this campaign is to help ensure that relief reaches affected areas as quickly as possible.
Contracts to CCP PLEX for GOOD will be accepted daily and added to the pool of PLEX donations, which will then be passed on to Doctors Without Borders and Ahbap. CCP Games is also accepting suggestions for other organizations providing relief efforts.
CCP Games are requesting minimum donations of 200 PLEX to help process them more efficiently. Those that don't have enough PLEX are encouraged to donate directly to Doctors Without Borders and/or Ahbap.
Finally, those that are looking to conduct their own PLEX-raising initiatives are encouraged to reach out to CCP Games directly, who will then help to raise awareness for their initiatives.
