It’s going to be a big year for super nerds if the first Wizards of the Coast showcase was anything to go by.
Wizards Presents Showcases Next Generation of D&D and 30 Years of Magic: The Gathering
Yesterday was an excellent day for super nerds as Wizards of the Coast held its first-ever direct-to-fan virtual event: Wizards Presents. Yes, that probably does mean we have yet another regular showcase to add to our diaries. And yes, we are very happy about it.
Wizards of the Coast's portfolio may be small, but it's mighty. It contains two of nerddom's most prized IPs - Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Suffice to say, then, that the Wizards Presents showcase has caused a significant stir. Here's a rundown of what occurred.
The Next Generation of D&D, codenamed One D&D, has begun playtesting. The newest iteration of the legendary tabletop game will include updated rules, backwards compatibility with 5e and a digital play experience via D&D Beyond that will offer 3D creation tools.
A new adventure, Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen, just dropped alongside a board game called Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn. The two are designed to be played simultaneously, adding yet another level of fun to your table. Shadow of the Dragon Queen will be available on December 6th.
D&D celebrates the 35th anniversary of legendary drow hero, Drizzt, with new covers for the Legend of Drizzt novels. A new Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary and a Drizzt Family webcomic are also en route.
Aside from the next generation of D&D, several new adventures, heists and collections are set to release in 2023.
Magic continues to develop the Universes Beyond product line, which incorporates other pop culture paragons into the legendary card game. This will include the latest additions: Warhammer 40k, the Lord of the Rings and even Doctor Who.
2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of Magic, which WotC is celebrating all year long. Celebrations will include the Magic 30 event in Las Vegas on October 28 - 30, alongside special promotions throughout the year.
Later this year, a return to Dominaria United will commemorate where Magic began in 1993. The four-set story arc will begin on September 9th, but can be preordered now.
So for anyone partial to both D&D and Magic - first of all, we salute you. But secondly, prepare yourselves for one huge year of nerding-out.
