An Activision Blizzard financial report has revealed plans for a new Warcraft mobile game - and it’s not Hearthstone.
WoW Wednesday: The New Warcraft Mobile Game Coming in 2022
It’s probably fair to say that we all knew the day would come when Warcraft finally made its way to the mobile platform. With this all but confirmed, however, we can only wait to see how Blizzard approaches the launch following the spanking that came after their Diablo Immortal announcement. Because, as yet, details are scant.
In a report on their fourth quarter and 2021 financial results, Activision Blizzard suggested that 2022 will include “new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.” But that little teaser is all we’re getting as of right now.
Of course, Warcraft mobile games aren’t strictly new. With the critically acclaimed Hearthstone being one of Blizzard’s biggest cash cows, it’s no surprise that the company keeps circling back to the platform. In fact, within the same report, it was revealed that “Hearthstone® fourth quarter net bookings grew year-over-year, driven by a steady cadence of new content.”
But Hearthstone is a card game, and a far cry from the RPG mechanics of Warcraft. So naturally, the rumour mill has begun to turn. Though our money is on the Pokémon Go-inspired Augmented Reality spinoff that has supposedly been in development for years now. After all, Pokémon Go is still one of the highest-grossing mobile games to this day. So that ship has far from sailed. If done correctly.
Mobile games aside, the report also promised “substantial new content” in the form of new experiences in World of Warcraft. Could this be the new Dragon Isles-based expansion we’ve been hearing about? Well yes, probably. But as long as this expansion goes off without a hitch and is in no way impeded by the new Warcraft mobile game, we’re hoping this addition will truly give fan’s something to smile about.
