ChatGPT and GPT4 users have managed to create playable AI video games in a matter of seconds.
Crafty Creations: AI Video Games are Here
Over the years, we've used our Crafty Creations series to highlight the creative efforts of human artists, modders, and Minecraft aficionados (among many others) in the world of gaming. But in a first for us, and the latest in a rapid series of signs that the future is already here, we're highlighting the work of an AI. And we, for one, love the AI video games created by our new robot overlords.
Take, for example, "Sumplete", A game described as a "reverse Sudoku" by the human prompt-giver/creator that has already garnered thousands of players. The 28-year-old software developer, Daniel Tate, described how he gave ChatGPT - the AI chatbot that everybody is talking both about and to - the task of creating a puzzle game from scratch.
After a little tinkering from both sides, ChatGPT then created a playable version of Sumplete in seconds with HTML and Javascript. Even the game's title was ChatGPT's idea.
Tait then proceeded to make a website for Sumplete so that anybody can jump in and play one of the first games created by AI. Job done. And it's already being championed as a game that could even stand up to Wordle.
Of course, creating a simple logic puzzle with a grid is one thing. But making a game that can stand up to the modern 3D games we know and love is another entirely. But another ChatGPT user proved that this is certainly not off the cards when they prompted GPT-4 (the paid-for and most up-to-date version of the AI chatbot) to create a 3D video game similar to Doom.
After giving GPT-4 a prompt as simple as "write an HTML program to create a doom-like video game", Javi Lopez was then bestowed with a game that featured a Doom-like maze. Though it did lack the all-important features of blasting demons to oblivion, the fact that the skeleton of a game was delivered in a matter of minutes without a human having to do a huge chunk of the work cannot be understated.
Of course, it's still a long time before AI video games hold a candle to the likes of such works of art as Elden Ring and EVE Online. Probably. But that doesn't make it any less impressive that creating a video game has now reached a new level of accessibility. So if you have any ideas for a video game, perhaps now is your chance to realize it with the help of AI.
