Embers Adrift is a crowdfunded classic MMORPG that actually made it to a full release.
Indie Spotlight: Could Embers Adrift Be the Answer to the Nostalgic MMO Gamer’s Prayers?
There are millions of MMO gamers in search of a new MMORPG that might reignite their passion for the genre. But they are all too often met with disappointment. Which is why an Indie game studio comprising devs in the same boat bodes well for the final product. And the fact that the crowdfunded Embers Adrift has made it all the way to a full release has us feeling hopeful.
Stormhaven Studios, the indie studio behind Embers Adrift, understands the plight of nostalgic MMO gamers who pine after the golden era of MMORPGs. And their ethos to deliver this elusive white whale of an MMO has yielded promising results.
Embers Adrift is a low fantasy MMORPG with exclusively PvE gameplay to be tackled together with a band of merry adventurers (who have a penchant for antlers, apparently). Social gameplay sits at the title's core in an effort to highlight what it is that makes the MMO genre stand out: developing and nurturing lasting relationships with your fellow gamers.
Players assume one of nine 'roles' (read: classes) that fit nicely within the holy trinity of MMOs. Supporter roles include the healing and buffing capabilities of the Duelist, Sentinel, and Warlord. Defender roles include the tanky Juggernaut, Knight, and Marshall. While the damage-dealing Striker roles include the Berserker, Brigand, and Warden.
Combat requires strategy when part of a group of up to six adventurers, with offensive and defensive tab-targeting abilities to deploy. Three gathering roles and six crafting professions offer the typical sideshow to the main event, including such classics as weaponsmith, woodworker, and prospector.
Non-linear dungeons, a unique AI aggro system, meaningful day and night cycles that affect mob behaviour, and quests with choice-based outcomes are just a few of the most exciting features promised by Embers Adrift. And if they make you as excited as us, we have good news.
When Can We Play?Embers Adrift is officially out now on PC and Mac, with a subscription model that Stormhaven adopted to stave off the insidious modern cash shop. To download, visit the Embers Adrift website.
